I produced a survey of nine questions that allowed the audience to give both quantitative and qualitative feedback. This enabled me to render my questions so that the audience could answer fixed answer questions as well as open response questions. The first question I asked was an open question to gain qualitative feedback, I asked 'What did you think about the overall extract from the soap opera?' my responses were mixed but similarly put. The feedback was that the extract really gave off a soap opera feel and the story line shown left the audience wanting to watch another episode to see what happened. The audience also touched upon the fact it was acted out really professionally and the production quality was to a high standard. In response to this, I am happy that the audience were fulfilled by my production and I am very happy that people engaged with the fact it was a soap opera as that means the story lines were relevant and interesting.

My second question was another open question which allowed me to gain qualitative feedback, I asked 'Who do you think will watch this audience wise?' I asked this so that I could gain an understanding of who the audience thought would be the main target audience of my soap opera. The feedback I got was varied, although a lot of people said that families would be the target audience as families tend to watch soaps together which gives a range of ages to the proposed target audience. Others said teenagers mainly 17+ to young adults, I think this was suggested more due to the fact the scene I produced was only using two characters who were young adults and the story line was about teenage pregnancy which I can understand only a minority of audience members might be able to relate to.
|
The third question was a closed question which allowed me to gain quantitative feedback, I asked 'Do you think both old and young audiences will enjoy this soap opera?' all respondents answered 'yes'. In response to this it shows that the audience feel as so the soap would be appropriate for both young and old audiences, this could be down to the fact people feel as so families would watch therefore a range of ages would be included. My soap is intended for families as there are family issues in my soap and even in the extract family issues are covered as Carlos is married with a child.
|
My fourth question asked the audience 'Did you as a viewer relate to any of the characters? Or at least feel empathy towards them emotionally?' I asked this because generally a soap opera has story lines and characters that relate to the audience and that is why people like soap operas because there's a level of comfort if they can relate to a story line or a character emotionally. All respondents answered 'yes' which tells me that the audience felt empathy towards the characters and also could have maybe related fully to the story line.

My fifth question asked the audience 'Was the sound quality good?' the reason I asked this was because I had trouble with the sound during my production as it was recorded in mono and I had to convert it to stereo during post production. The respondents all responded saying that the sound quality was good, however I think it could still be better as the sound quality wouldn't be fit for TV broadcast but I would have to get a sound engineer involved to help ADR it fully. |
My sixth question asked the audience asked 'Do you feel the camera angles, shots and movements are appropriate for a soap opera?' I asked this because soap opera's tend to use rather simplistic shots rather than anything too technical so I wanted to know if the audience felt as so the shots were appropriately filmed for the genre. The feedback I got was that the audience thought the camera angles, shots and movements were appropriate for the soap opera which means my soap fits in with the genre in terms of production. |
My seventh question asked the audience 'Do you think it fits in with the soap opera genre?' this is similar to the previous question but I just wanted to make sure that the audience felt like the production was like a scene from a soap opera and conformed to all of the codes and conventions that would be apparent in a standard soap opera. The feedback I got was that all respondents thought it fitted in with the soap opera genre which in my response tells me I produced the extract correctly and in line with the soap opera genre.
|
My eighth question asked the respondents 'Do you think the production would be fit for TV broadcast in terms of quality?' I asked this because I was skeptical about the quality, especially the sound. However the audience thought that the quality was fit for TV broadcast although I would definitely improve on the sound to maximise its potential to be broadcast on the TV.

Lastly, my ninth and final question asked the audience if they thought there was a gap in the market for this type of soap opera. The feedback I got was that the audience definitely saw a gap in the market for Bon Appetit which is reassuring as I tried to make Bon Appetit original but similar to soap operas so that I knew audiences would enjoy it. I made it original by having the main set as a restaurant as there isn't a soap out there that uses a restaurant set as the central meeting point as well as the centre of the soap. |
