The protagonist of The Present is a young boy who plays the leading character, the short film is centered around his character and his feelings. Like most protagonists in film, this character changes and grows as a person over the course of the story. The antagonist in this short film would be the dog, not because it's seen as an enemy but because it interferes with the action of the young boy and makes the young boy have strong negative feelings until the plot turns around later on in the film. I would say the dog is a temporary antagonist because later on in the film the young boy and dogs relationship changes for the better.

How Do These Characters Represent The Views Of The Writer? The Present was made by Jacob Frey who based The Present off a comic strip by the Brazilian comic artist Fabio "Coala" Cavalcanti. Jacob Frey read the comic strip and was completely in love with the idea of remaking an animation out of it after saying the story was shocking and heart warming. The main character in the original comic is extremely bipolar of which Jacob Frey adapted into the short film by the emotion change throughout the film. The characters represent the writers views through emotion and reaction, Jacob Frey wanted the audience to have the same reaction he had after reading the comic and wanted the audience the have the same reaction to his animation. He carefully animated it showing all the emotion possible, creating a powerful and meaningful animation. For example, we can see the reaction and emotion in the young boys face when he realises the dog has only three legs and then the reaction of the dog being hurt when he throws it onto the floor, but because the dog then gets up again and is craving attention from the young boy we automatically as an audience feel sorry for the dog, as the story goes on and the boy eventually gets up and plays with the dog as an audience we sense such a heart warming emotion, which is one of the emotions the writer had when reading the comic before he remade it into a short animated film. |
Describe The Environments Used In The Animations - How This Represented? Is It A True Representation Of The Global World You Live In?
The environment of this animation is very realistic, it's a very accurate representation of the global world I live in. The animation is set inside a house, the house is of a normal average size when it comes to interior. It's the average size of house for a working class/middle class family as they have enough disposable income to afford a new dog. Also if we analyse the interior in the house, we can see there is a TV. Games Console, Furniture, Ornaments etc so we can see this is a family with a lot of disposable income which fits in with the idea that the mum works a lot and there could be a dad figure who works away from home. This environment is a very true representation of the world we live in today, most middle class families have parents/ a parent with a good job so they have disposable income to spend on luxuries such as games consoles, TV's and a puppy. |

Protagonists and Antagonists
The protagonists in Alvin and the Chipmunks is the three main characters which are Alvin, Simon and Theodore these are three inclined singing chipmunks. Alvin who is the leader of the trio and is a mischievous troublemaker who quickly becomes the star of the group quite short on into the film. Simon is the tall intellectual who wears glasses and Theodore who is the chubby impressionable one. The reason why these three characters are the protagonists is due to the fact they're main characters, the film revolves around them and their antics. The antagonist in this film is Ian Hawke who is an unfair record executive who tried to break up the family and exploit the chipmunks. |
The plot starts with the cutting down of the tree that the chipmunks all called home causing them to find a new home. Links Between Character and Narrative Themes Within The Medium
The genre of Alvin and the Chipmunks is a musical comedy so the narrative theme going through the film is comedy and music. The film shows this is the genre through the actions of the characters, things the characters say and how the characters look. The film is based on three singing animated anthropomorphic chipmunks , as the centre of the film these three characters have to convey the theme of the film and this is done through how bubbly, humorous and witty they are the suggest the theme of comedy. They also suggest theme of music as they very musically talented which even shocks Dave Seville who is a song writer in the film. Having characters such as Dave Seville who is a songwriter and Ian Hawke who is an record executive links the theme of music nicely within the story. At the start of the film when the chipmunks have to find a new home they happen to find a home of a songwriter, this is a nice surprise as it lets the chipmunks and the songwriter bond over music. |
Describe The Environments Used In The Animations - How This Represented? Is It A True Representation Of The Global World You Live In?
The environment used in Alvin and the Chipmunks is in and around California, whether that be a theater setting or a lake it's all set in and around California. This environment is represented in a very realistic way, this is helped due to the fact only the chipmunks are live action animated characters not the settings or other characters which really brings the film alive and makes it more real life for the audience. The setting is a true representation of the global world we live in, for example there is a scene set in Downtown Los Angeles and it isn't a studio it's physically set there which represents the location accurately. Another way of which its a true representation of the global world we live in is because in the film we see things like cars, buildings and places that are recongnisble so it is a very accurate environment that portrays the global world we live in. There are famous buildings involved in the film for example one scene is set in Orpheum Theatre which is well known, this suggests the fact the locations were picked to be recognisable to an audience and more importantly realistic. |
