The funding for BBC comes from the license fee which covers the costs of all BBC channels and stations. Subscriptions and advertising also do help cover the costs of the BBC's channels and stations but it is mainly covered by the license fee which households pay if they have a TV. However, the service budget for BBC Radio 1 was £41 million in 2013/14 which may seem a lot but the station gets extra funding from live coverage of festivals and events as well as putting on major events such as BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend, Radio 1 Roadshows, Ibiza Weekender, BBC Radio 1's Teen Awards and Edinburgh Festival.

The income comes from the license fee which is put in place by the BBC, the license fee simply allows the BBC's services to remain free of advertisements and independent of shareholder and political interest which is what makes the BBC stand out from other channels and stations. The fee covers a wide range of radio content and also allows the BBC to bring the radio to listeners in lots of different ways and services. The BBC Radio 1 breakfast show runs off the fee as it is a BBC show.

The main audience targeted is 15 to 29 years however the audience profile in more detail shows us that only 41.2% of the shows listeners are 15 - 29 years of age and the shows median age is in fact 30 which tells us people older than the target audience age listen to radio 1 and also those who could be much younger.
